St. Sylvester, Pope of Rome

Forms of name: Sylvester

St. Sylvester was born to Christian parents sometime in the 3rd century. He was ordained a deacon and then a presbyter by Bishop Marcellinus (296-304), and was chosen Bishop of Rome in 314.

During the reign of Constantine the Great, the Jews arranged a public debate to determine which faith was true. St. Sylvester represented the Christians, while 120 learned rabbis led by Zambres represented the Jews. Quoting the Old Testament, St. Sylvester convincingly demonstrated the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was declared the victor. Zambres and the other Jews believed in Christ and asked to be baptized.

St. Sylvester died peacefully in old age in the year 335.
