St. Anthony was a famed ascetic and wonderworker who lived in the Thebaid desert for 85 years, and was spiritual father to several monasteries which grew up around him. The story of his life was written by St. Athanasius the Great (to whom St. Anthony, at his death, left one of his monastic mantles).
